Kendra Merritt
Kendra has been making up stories for as long as she can remember, but she started her first novel when she was fourteen because she had an old computer in her room and characters in her head.
When she was twenty-one she had a scoliosis surgery, and a poorly placed epidural left her with an incomplete spinal cord injury. While she was in the hospital learning how to walk again, she realized that all the heroic characters she read about could run and jump and swing a sword. She never saw any that looked and walked like herself.
So, She started writing familiar stories from unfamiliar points of view, highlighting heroes with disabilities. Her own experience with partial paraplegia has shown her you don’t have to be able to swing a sword to save the day.
By Wingéd Chair, a retelling of Robin Hood where Maid Marion kicks butt from a wheelchair, was awarded first place in the science fiction/fantasy category of the Pikes Peak Writers’ Zebulon contest.
